svenskaFlora Nordica - a research project and a scientific flora

The project

Flora Nordica started as a research project within the Bergius Foundation in Stockholm. During 2004-2006, the project is financed by Formas (the Swedish Research Council for Environment, Agricultural Sciences and Spatial Planning); the Bergius Foundation, the Department of Phanerogamic Botany at the Swedish Museum of Natural History, and the Royal Swedish Academy of Science also give support. Botanical societies, herbaria and other institutions contribute in various ways.

The primary aim of the project is to produce a scientific flora covering all wild-growing vascular plants of Norden, from Iceland in the west to Finland in the east, and from Svalbard in the north to Denmark in the south. Botanists from all the Nordic countries, both professionals and amateurs, participate in the thorough review of accounts for the flora.

The books

Flora Nordica will comprise 15 volumes. For all species, subspecies, varieties and hybrids – also casual aliens – the treatment includes synonyms, official names in Nordic languages, and distribution information. For the more common casuals and for all residents, a fairly detailed description is provided, as well as information about chromosome numbers, habitat and reproductive biology. Distribution in Norden is shown as dot maps, where occurrence and status in each of the 88 floristic provinces is displayed. Matters like variation and species delimitation are discussed, and unsolved problems are stated; the scope is to provide a summary of today's knowledge. An extensive list of references is included in each volume. Most illustrations are black-and-white drawings of plant details.

Flora Nordica, written in English, addresses professionals and advanced amateurs in Norden and elsewhere.

Forthcoming volumes

Volume 6 is next in turn to be published, then vols 3 and 12, and probably vols 4, 10 and 5 (see contents of volumes). The sequence of families is basically the same as in Flora Europaea; differences are due to practical considerations or changes in classification. The delimitation of families reflects the classification accepted at the time of publication. - Accepted contributions for later volumes may be published on the project's web site.
