Taxonomy. The genus Cyclospermum, earlier in Apium, is distinguished by more elongated cotyledons, subrhomboidal pollen grains (oval in Apium s.str.) and a chromosome base-number of x=7 (x=11 in Apium); it was first published as Ciclospermum (Cerceau-Larrival 1964). When the original type species C. ammi (L.) Lag. proved to belong to Trachyspermum, the genus was proposed for conservation with the new type species C. leptophyllum (Burtt 1989); upon conservation the spelling was altered to Cyclospermum (Nicolson 1993).
