Trachyspermum ammi (L.) Sprague 1929 (T. copticum (L.) Link. 1821). D Ajwan. F koptilainen kumina. S ajowan. – Lit.: Skovgaard 1986, Townsend (1989), Tutin (1980; also ill.). – Annual, 30–50 cm. Stem conspicuously green, slightly glaucous. Leaves 2–3-pinnatifid, with linear lobes. Bracts and bractlets present (bracts sometimes lobed). Petals white, with pointed papillae on back; anthers red, 0.3–0.4 mm. Fruit ovate in outline, with blunt papillae except on the narrowed beak.
D Sjæ København 5 localities 1961– 91 (mainly at sewage-treatment plants, presumably from bird-seed). BhG Göteborg 1913, 1926, 1930, Strömstad 1955 (weed in nursery). – Cultivated as a spice and medicinal plant in S Asia and E Africa and escaped; native occurrence uncertain (Townsend 1989). – Map (not in book).
